Shot Put Glide Analysis 01 [Frame by Frame]

Here's Andy again from the same practice.  Now I go over his glide.
Remember everyone, middle might be acceptable but one of the extremes is usually better.  Start high and drop (dynamic start) or just start parallel to the ground.  This in between really isn't good.

Ok, I haven't seen this in a while and I was worried I'd find one of the awful jokes I usually tell, but it made me howl.

I'm not sure what I meant by "wild right."  I'm guessing it was something I saw in the video.  I'm guessing he kept changing his placement of the shot.

I'm surprised I didn't point out his awful left arm.  Guys, keep the left arm back, wasted energy moving it around and also it helps as a counter weight to the unseating.

How do I not mention the fact that his right foot is a foot away from the back of the circle and the heel is still on the ground.  Dragging the foot here is like putting on the brakes.  It's hard to pull it under your body in time if he's being slowed down by cement.

Anyone who is struggling with getting their right foot around, good chance you are like Andy here, flat footed.  It's so common, get your heel as high off the ground as you can, without floating.

If the shot wasn't falling away from his face and his fingers so spread apart, he could easily make that elbow position work.

Also notice with this position how much weight he has loaded on his left foot.  He's shoe looks like it's being crushed, while his right foot looks like it has little to no load on it.  That comes from his late left leg from the previous frame.  He landed late and rocked all his weight onto it.  His weight crashed and by the time it reloads to fire the shot will be just about out of his hand.

Not much new in this frame (and I don't say much in the caption either, jesus I'm just using words to say nothing aren't I?).  Notice his right foot lifting off the ground, not pushing.  Notice his left leg is still under all of his weight and his COG depends completely on it.  And I think I said he block looks good because it's in position to be good but doesn't actually do anything.  It's like saying the structure of a building looks good but it's made out of paper and is completely useless even though it's framed wonderfully.
