Useful Webapps - Google Reader

Google is slowly turning into “Skynet” from the Terminator movies. It’s taking over the internet and growing at an insane rate. It’s coming up with new webapps all the time and it’s free versions of paid software.

The one I use the most is their Reader app.

Before this you could subscribe to RSS feeds from your favorite blogs. Updates would then be loaded into a drop down icon on your browser.

One day I thought it was a great thing, then later that week I was annoyed with all the new notifications with no detail.

Google Reader stores all the blogs you frequent and you can access them all inside the app itself, without actual having to go to the blog.

I have mine set up so there are different folders, each corresponding to different blog themes.

It gives you options to share the posts you like with others. You can store them so you can refer back to them later. Also, for obsessive people like me, you can check stats on how many posts you’ve read over whatever period of time.

Lastly, it will suggest other blogs based on what you are already subscribed to.

I do all my blog reading in there. For the most part if I can’t view the blog on Google Reader, I won’t bother following the blog at all.

Without it I was regularly checking 2 to 10 blogs a week. Now I have over 100 listed and I can just ignore posts that don’t interest me. I can’t recommend it enough. It’s an amazing resource for following a large amount of blogs.

I’ll suggest some of the better blogs I follow soon.
