Don't Be Unprepared

Alfred State Track Entrance

This year I signed on to Alfred State College as a volunteer coach in August.  I really disliked the A.D. at my previous school (not paying me for one of the seasons when I was suppose to get paid for both) so I needed a change.

I figured volunteering at a Jr. College was better than being at a high school.

At the high school I was there daily which made adjustments easy. Alfred is almost 2 hours away because of financial reasons I only go twice a week.

In the 2-3 months before we started practicing daily I should have written work outs and made it so even though I'm not there they know what I want them to do. Instead, I did nothing so I was planning a week in advance for a month's worth of work.

This laziness on my part made it so they don't really know what they are doing with much advance notice. On occasions they just did whatever and I'm sure it wasn't what I'd want. I can't blame the athletes for their lack of focus because their coach doesn't reflect that focus.

The worse feeling that I've experienced as a coach is when my athletes fail because of my mistakes. If they fail because they did something I can adjust it for next time. If I mess up they can't do anything but hope I don't do it again.

While I'm still struggling to stay ahead of the game I've done better lately on having work outs prepared.  At this point they know what I expect so it's not a mystery to them as to what I would normally have them do.
