How Do You Measure Success?

Will Houlihan

I got talking with Rob (my athlete from my high school days) and we got talking about how Alfred did this year.

I forget how the conversation went this way but success came up and I bluntly said to him, “success to me is if my athletes and I are having fun and they are improving.”

If it was professional throwers I was coaching I would put more emphasis on improvement but at my level the important thing is to enjoy doing it daily.

For the most part my guys aren’t obsessed about throwing. They aren’t crazed like me going home and reading a bunch of shit to make them better. They aren’t watching videos of themselves throwing and figuring out a plan of attack to fix their problems.

They come to practice, throw and shortly after leaving return to reality of school and dorm life. For the most part they are throwing because they enjoy it.

My goal is to make practice fun everyday by cracking jokes and ribbing each other.

During one of our many mud filled practices I encouraged everyone to see if we could completely cover Will’s legs with mud (he was wearing shorts). In between everyone’s throws we’d splash mud on him.

I still coached every throw and when they were in the circle it was all business. But instead of them just waiting in a line for their turn to throw, we all got to have a little fun at Will’s expense.

They all threw farther than the beginning of the year and we all enjoyed our time at practice. Practice should always be fun in my opinion. Jacko Gill understands this point well.

It makes the time go by quicker and everyone looks forward to what craziness will happen tomorrow.
