Kinovea - Free Video Analysis Software

Another weekly feature I'm going to do is post useful programs, webapps, blogs and websites.  To be clear I receive no money for these.  They are just things I can't live without.

Kinovea

I bought a $400 camera that is designed to take high-speed images and video. I thought I was the man, but that’s pretty common until I found Kinovea. The frame by frame feature makes my camera pretty much a $100 point and shoot.

Every time I get video from meets or practice, I throw it into Kinovea and go over the finer details of the throw frame by frame. It also allows you to run the video on loop. I have let one run for an hour looking at certain positions.

Another great feature I use is the side by side video. This lets you put two videos up simultaneously. I’ll use that to see if there were any improvements from a previous date. It really helps you evaluate if what you’ve been saying and doing at practice is actualy working. I’m sure there are other features, but I haven’t gone too deep into the program.

Really the 3 features I mentioned are all I need at this time. It’s not like I’m doing a detail biomechanical report.

It’s similar to Dartfish which people praise but forget to mention the price. Kinovea is free, which is great for a poor coach like me. I’m sure Dartfish has more features and if you can afford it I’m sure it’s worth it. But until a school buys me a copy, I’ll be sticking with Kinovea.
