Specific Warm Ups

I have mentioned before I dislike long warm ups. Rather than just bashing it and moving on, I'll give my opinion for a better option. Warm ups which are specific in nature are more effective when they relate to their event. Instead of doing stuff like carioca and shuffles, do shadow throws and drills without the implement. Just because I mentioned track in my previous post, do running drills like A and B skips.

This accomplishes two things: First, you get a warm up which targets the exact muscles you'll be using. Second, this will enable you to sneak in some coaching. If the kids aren't doing the cariocas correctly, you'll have to explain to them how to do it correctly on a consistent basis. This is a waste of energy as they won't be using this movement in any event. If you use drills however, you are coaching them to do their event better.

Instead of being quiet during warm ups, be observant and interact with your athletes as needed. Watch everyone closely and make sure they are doing those drills correctly. After enough time of hard coaching and repetition, they will start to improve without realizing why.

Time is always a factor. If you waste it on anything other than improvement, you'll keep wondering why your athletes aren't improving like other's are.
