More Problems with Over Prescribing Drills

I have not been coaching long so I'm not sure if this is a new trend, or something that’s been going on for a while. I think my previous hatred toward drills was their general misuse.
I saw so many people doing what is suppose to be a drill during competitions. It’s common to see half turns and South Africans during discus competitions in high school. I was sent over the edge during a local college meet I attended at my alma mater. I went over to watch shot put and to see a freshman from my old school throw. He lined up facing the throwing field which I found weird. He then put his right foot in the air and did a South African to throw. I was disgusted that this would be allowed by a coach.

I don’t completely understand where this came from. Drills were designed to help progress through a throw, and now they are being used as a form of throwing. We should be teaching athletes the biomechanics of drills designed to help the thrower; not overtake proper technique. I feel like I’m being a little harsh but with how hard I’m working to get a college job, it’s upsetting to see someone who seems too lazy to push his athletes pass their comfort zone.
