Personal Strides Forward
My Shortcomings

I'm amazed at how much I continue to develop as a coach as the years pass. My first experience analyzing a rotational shot putter was like watching a long distance race. I was unable to make the connection as to how people become better. Now I can watch almost anyone throwing sub-65 feet and spot at least 2-3 things they need to fix (depending on how fast they are moving). I continue to struggle with anyone throwing over 65, as their errors are much less significant.
Now that I'm back into coaching hammer / weight I'm starting to find my stride there as well. Hammer has always been my favorite event. Even though I went to states for shot put in high school, I never really practiced it. We pretty much only practiced hammer. My last two years in college I worked primarily on hammer as well. Aside from basic training, I read a lot in order to find ways to improve. It’s taken a while to pull all that information back into the forefront of my memory, but I think I’m finally back on track (Pun intended damn it).
I'm still struggling with discus. I never liked it and I have a feeling I'm going to get stuck with a 150 footer who expects me to take them to 175+. I don’t doubt myself as a competent discus coach however, if I coach anyone over 190 I’d be amazed.
Finally, I have an over whelming urge lately to learn how to throw javelin. I think that it is also necessary to consider myself a complete coach. I doubt I'll ever coach a good/great javelin athlete, but a general competency in the event seems like a good career move. There is also something so majestic about the event which intrigues me. Athletes who resemble sprinters / jumpers throwing a spear 200+ feet, hoping not to kill someone is just amazing to me. Plus having an army of these guys on your side will help during the apocalypse.

Not sure why you are struggling with discus if you think you can coach the rotational shot. The body doesn't magically change between the two. And, you shouldn't be PUSHING the shot anyway. And, HITing the discus...well...it won't go far that way. ;)
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I don't know either. I think it's just because I haven't had someone passionate about discus yet. I've had people who are dying to throw shot and hammer far and wouldn't mind throwing discus. I don't think it's that I don't feel I could coach them, probably more in my confidence at this movement. It hasn't happened therefore can it?
