Take Control of Practice From the Beginning

My first practice was a mess. I was expecting my hand to be held for a while, as this is my first gig. Instead I was brought to the school we practiced at (we didn't have a home track), quickly introduced to the guys, then sent me off to the circle to deal with them.
I had no works outs, no plans and no idea what these guys knew. I started with teaching them the basics, but didn't have any control so they basically did what they wanted.
It took at least a solid month for these guys to trust or even listen to me. This didn't come from being gentle and waiting for them to come around. I hit a breaking point and just started commanding people to listen and respect me. I did take this lesson over to later situations.
This was done without yelling. I took a firm stance that if you weren’t there to practice, go home and do something else. I remember three separate times when I sent someone or everyone home early.
On one occasion I seriously thought one of my seniors was going to throw a dumbbell at me. The following day he came up and apologized for getting out of control.
Once you let everyone know who is in control, they don't have a problem giving it to you. They do however expect you to know what you are doing and have their best interests at heart. If they sense you don't they can quickly turn on you.
