Andy Jones Hammer Throw

I think I'm noticing a trend with myself. I can only focus on getting people good in one event at a time; or at least it seems that way. During the last two years coaching at the high school level I only had good shot putters. I had some good discus throwers, but both years I had the number 1 or 2 shot putters in the section and discus followed far behind. This year my crew is improving by leaps and bounds in hammer but the other events aren't going as well.

I don't fully believe it's because of me just yet. 2 of my 4 athletes only do hammer and the other two are only practicing hammer. One does shot and discus, but I know he's not practicing them even though I'm telling him to. I only have 1 guy practicing all three events which I don't really like doing; which I'll explain later. When I was coaching at the high school my first year the guy who did well indoor ended up basically quitting during outdoor so he didn't really throw discus. Last year Rob hated discus, forcing him to do it just got him frustrated which would lead to him just giving up.

I'm not ready to jump to the conclusion that it's my fault I only end up with one strong event. I do let my athlete's pick what they want to do rather than force them into other events. Next year it sounds like I'll have a more diverse group. I'm hoping to have a strong shot and hammer team rather than one or the other, hell maybe discus can even join in.

  1. It's sooo tough to do 4 events at a given time. For team points its nice to do multiple events but to really reach your potential 1 is ideal and 2 is max.

  2. Ya I actual plan on talking about that soon. I'll put my post on that up on Tuesday. This post wasn't about my guys not doing multiple events, more so how I only get athletes in one event. I mean I had 4 this year and none did well in any other event. It's a weird trend I'm noticing.
