It's Not About You!

Here's a little more onto Friday's post about Changing Mindsets

You can literally know everything there is about throwing. Know the perfect work outs and how to have everyone to perform the best they possibly can at big meets.

It means nothing if you can't explain it to the athletes who have to do this perfect program.

Whether you have the brightest or dumbest athlete, if you want them to perform well they need to understand what you want them to do.

What YOU want to do doesn't matter.

Some athletes won't respond to a nice guy desiring more of a a drill sergeant style coach. Others may want the complete opposite. Guess what, your job is to do both.

Unless you are going to kick people off the team, you need to adjust to what they need and want out of a coach. If you don't adjust to them they won't listen. They either won't respect you, or they just won't understand where you are coming from.

At the same time, you can't become a cheerleader. They may like having a soft coach who is more understanding or forgiving, but you still need to push them. I previously had an athlete who I constantly praised. He ended up feeling so good about himself he didn't care to do any better.

Finding a balance between what they want and what you think they need, is key to reaching a great relationship with that person. The better the relationship the more responsive they will be to your program.
