Not only does each athlete's work out need to be different, but how you deal with athletes needs to be different. How you interact with one guy might be completely different from how you need to talk to a girl on the team. It all depends on their motives and why they are on the team in the first place.
My second year coaching I had an athlete who was out to prove he was just as good as the best thrower the year prior. This year I have a couple who just like being part of a team. One who doesn't care what she throws, just how she places at nationals. Additionally, another who is obsessed with being as good as he thinks he is in his mind. Each of these characters has different demands from me as their coach.
Some might just want a fun atmosphere where they can improve, but most importantly enjoy their time. Others only expect results and don't care what they have to do to achieve this. These types will do just about anything if it will make them better. The key as a coach is discovering / delivering what an athlete is expecting from them in a way that helps them become better, while enjoying their time. It's the coach’s job to figure out the best way to coach everyone. It’s not the athlete's job to adjust to the coach's style.
