Alfred State Update 4/29/11

2011 NJCAA Region III Track and Field Championships at SUNY Delhi

I have no videos and I wasn't at the meet so I don't have much to say about what happened.  From talking to everyone the weather and circle sucked.  Chris said he kept hitting his winds on a small hill at the back of the circle.  Andy said no one was doing well.  For example the top seed was in at 50m and only threw 44.

Mo became a NJCAA region 3 Champion.  She had a big improvement throwing 35.67 which puts her 3rd nationally.  With everything being set up so they peak this week I'm hoping she can pull out 36-38 which should be good for at least a top 3 finish maybe even a national championship.  Not bad for someone who threw 29m and finished 8th last year.

Chris, like I said he was struggling with the weather and the weird circle but still had a decent performance.  He still threw 41.27m which is his second best meet of the year also gave him a 5th place finish.  I'm hoping he can throw 44-46 Thursday which should be good for a top 4-5 finish.

Andy struggled with the rain.  He usually steps wide so if he can find his balance he can hit some great throws but when he misses it he usually can't recover.  He finished 2nd with a throw of 43.72 missing first place by about a half meter.  He's never had far practice throws.  The meet he threw 46 he was throwing about 40-42 all week.  This past week he popped a 47-48m throw that got him a golf clap from the rest of the team.  With him relaxing, ready to peak and hopefully good weather I think 50m might be a possibility.

Will had a great day.  He's night and day from the beginning of the year.  Everyone has major improvements but he didn't know this event at all.  He honestly didn't believe he would make it to nationals.  I had a long talk with him trying to build his confidence and let him know that he will do well if he puts his full effort in.  He came out and threw 36.03 which is a 2m PR, giving him 6th place and just missed qualifying for nationals by .60m but the head coach is going to wild card him in.  Beginning of March he said he wanted to throw 30m, Saturday he told me he wants 40m.

They all left the meet with All-Region status.  4 days until nationals and we get to see what everyone has left in the tank.  I'm hoping they can all end on PRs regardless of how they place.  Although, I'd really like to have two nationals champions and 2 all-americans.

I have one more team update and then the following week I'm going to cover what I plan to adjust in the off season.  I usually plan much more than I actual do but I do want a list of things I'd like to do.
